Tacombi at Fonda Nolita, New York
We were walking along Elizabeth Street on a winter night when we came across this intriguing Mexican den. We both love Mexican food so we couldn´t resist the temptation and ended up stepping into Tacombi at Fonda Nolita.
Tacos and tamales were being served on small tin plates from a red and white VW van parked in the middle of a concrete garage. The vintage tables, the glow of lightbulbs, the spray painted ads on the walls and the hub-bub were all part of the charm.
Apparently, Tacombi began selling tacos out of a converted VW bus in Playa del Carmen, Yucatán. Now, suitably stationed in New York, this trendy taquería offers Mexican Street food in a laid-back atmosphere.
We started nibbling on some excellent guacamole con totopos (tortilla chips). Although we loved the fresh and creamy texture of it, we found the dish a little bit pricey ($11.49). After a short while, our tacos were ready to eat!
It was hard to beat the ones we had in Mexico which could be described as an incredible assault on our senses. However, despite the fact that the tacos at Tacombi didn´t impress us much, they were decent at least.
There are around 8 different tacos with a variety of ingredients and flavors to please any palate: Barbacoa Taco, made with beef short rib, was definitely the one we liked most. The ordering procedure is quite surprising as you have to exchange your dollars for some casino chips at a drink stand where their own line of sodas called Lupita, horchatas, aqua de Jamaica and tamarindo are sold. Then, you place your order at the vintage VW van, grab a seat and finally get your meal.
Tacombi At Fonda Nolita didn´t fully live up to our expectations but it´s a good venue to enjoy south-of-the-border Mexican specialties for a casual breakfast, lunch, dinner or late-night snack.
Like many restaurants in New York, Tacombi At Fonda Nolita doesn´t take reservation so guests are seated on a first come, first served basis.
